Coast Guard Searches For Sailing Vessel And Crew

LOS ANGELES - The Coast Guard received a distress call late Monday night  from a sailing vessel that was taking on water in the vicinity of Dana Point, Calif.

The four person crew of the 20-foot sailing vessel Pelican, reported that their vessel had been struck by lightning about 15 miles off Dana Point. About 20 minutes later the crew reported they were abandoning ship and that they had flares, flashlights and life vests. The vessel  had been sailing from Avalon to Dana Point.

A Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and the Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal from Corona Del Mar, Calif. proceeded to the area and conducted searches from Oceanside, Calif. to Point Dume, Calif. A U.S. Naval hovercraft in the area also joined in the search.

No signs of the vessel or crew have been found.

A C-130 aircraft from Air Station Sacramento is in enroute to conduct further searches off Catalina Island.
