| Coast Guard Cutter Blacktip Rescues Six from Sinking Boat |

CATALINA ISLAND, Calif. - The Coast Guard Cutter Blacktip, an 87-foot patrol boat home ported in Oxnard, Calif., rescued six people from a sinking boat near the west end of Catalina Island today. The Coast Guard received a call this morning at 10:38 reporting that a 22-foot pleasure craft was taking on water. A HH-65C Dolphin Helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station L.A. was dispatched, along with the CGC Blacktip and a vessel from Baywatch Isthmus. The Blacktip was the first unit on scene. Members of the crew were able to evacuate the passengers of the pleasure craft and successfully pump the vessel free of water. The passengers were transported to the Baywatch station on Catalina Island by the Blacktip and the Baywatch vessel was able to tow the pleasure craft to safety. The U.S. Coast Guard asks boaters to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their passengers. Always wear a life jacket and require passengers to do the same; never boat under the influence; complete a boating safety course; and get a free vessel safety check annually from local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. |
