Long Beach, Calif - Today the Coast Guard successfully tested its own oil spill response equipment in Long Beach Harbor just outside Alamitos Bay.  The San Pedro, Calif. based 175-foot buoy tender, Coast Guard cutter George Cobb, participated in the annual exercise of the Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System (VOSS).

The VOSS is a portable oil spill skimming system designed to convert any suitable ship available into a single ship oil-recovery platform.

In this exercise wood shavings were used to simulate a 500 gallon oil spill.
